Oral Cancer Awareness

When you’re looking for an affordable dentist in Washington DC or Arlington, VA, we at Fidel Dental Group are glad to provide you with high-quality dentistry at a reasonable price. We’re not only proud of our wide variety of dental treatments – we’re just as proud of our compassionate dental care and dedication to raising patient awareness in regard to oral hygiene. As we’re quickly approaching the month of April, we feel that it’s important to let you know about how April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Oral cancer is actually one of the deadlier diseases in the country; it kills more people nationwide than skin cancer or cervical cancer. In fact, only about half of the people who are diagnosed with oral cancer will live for another five years. Because it’s so deadly, we want to give you the best chance for staving off this disease and provide you with some needed information for spotting early signs of cancer and also preventing it from occurring.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Some of the most common signs and symptoms of oral cancer include the following:

  • Red or white patches in your mouth
  • Tenderness, numbness, or pain in your lips or mouth
  • Lumps or rough spots in your mouth
  • Sores on the mouth or lips that don’t heal
  • Bleeding in the mouth
  • General soreness or irritation
  • Difficulty chewing, speaking, swallowing, or moving your jaw

If you happen to notice any of these signs, it’s important for you to contact your dentist as soon as possible. Oral cancer can be life threatening if it’s not diagnosed and treated in its early stages.

How You Can Prevent Oral Cancer

In order to help prevent oral cancer, here are a few simple tips:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day.
  • Floss daily.
  • Don’t smoke or chew any type of tobacco product.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation.
  • Don’t stay out in the sun too long.
  • Check your mouth once a month for any suspicious lumps or patches.
